MCIRCC launches new Seminar Series with Dr. Steffen Leonhardt
Dr. Steffen Leonhardt, Philips Endowed Chair of Medical Information Technology at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, was in Ann Arbor on March 9 discussing nonobtrusive and noncontact monitoring techniques for medical applications.
About 50 attendees turned out to Palmer Forum for the first of the MCRICC Seminar Series, which invites leaders from all disciplines to present on a range of critical care topics. This inaugural event was hosted in partnership with the Department of Computational Medicine and Bioinformatics (DCMB), and the Michigan Integrated Center for Health Analysis and Medical Prediction (MiCHAMP).
Titled “Thou Shalt Not Touch,” Dr. Leonhardt spoke about the newest innovations in noncontact monitoring. In describing his own work, he illustrated multiple options for contact-free measurements of vitals in various stages of research and commercialization, including new optical BCG sensors that are integrated into the textiles of car seats, hospital beds, or even incubators for premature babies.
“My vision is for an incubator where all vitals are taken without touching,” noted Dr. Leonhardt.
In a last minute addition to his presentation, Dr. Leonhardt also treated the audience to a discussion on feedback control in medicine.
“Dr. Leonhardt is a walking, talking example of convergence science,” said MCIRCC’s Executive Director Kevin Ward.
